There will be no IV medications given, everything will be via pill form right here in our office. Once you are soundly sleeping, Dr. Hepler will begin treatment. At our Alpharetta dentistry office we focus on the administering of oral medication for our sedation dentistry techniques. This form of sedation dentistry is called oral conscious sedation. Oral conscious sedation dramatically reduces your fears and discomfort through the use of oral sedative medication. Oral conscious sedation is an affordable and needle-free alternative to IV sedation.

Oral conscious sedation is a safe alternative to general anesthesia, which will render patients completely unconscious. Although this form of sedation dentistry is often considered “sleep dentistry” and presumed to be performed by “sleep dentists” you will not actually be asleep when sedated using OCS. Oral conscious sedation will let you enjoy a heightened state of relaxation that usually leads to patients not remembering much about the procedure afterwards. With OCS you will be in a dream-like state, and hours in the chair may only feel like a few brief minutes.

How Does Oral Conscious Sedation Work?

Oral Conscious Sedation works in conjunction with a local anesthesia to ensure that you don’t experience any pain during your dental procedure. When your sedation dentistry is in full effect you will be so relaxed that you may hardly even notice that you are undergoing a procedure.

There are generally two appointments that are required for a procedure that will be utilizing OCS. During your first visit, we will be asking you questions to gather your detailed health history. During this same visit we will be taking dental x-rays and you’ll be given a prescription for a sedative medication that will be taken the night before your second appointment to help you enjoy a good night’s sleep.

We request that all patients have a companion bring them to and from our office for your second visit. Upon your arrival you will be administered additional medication that will have a calming affect and help put you in a tranquil state of mind. Our sedation dentist, Dr. Hepler, will closely monitor your comfort level during the entire duration of your procedure and visit.
