We are excited to tell you about some of the new discoveries about oral health and its connection to overall health. We have learned about the systemic effects that gum disease has on our bodies. When there is infection in our mouths, the bacteria and poisons get in our bloodstream and do untold damage.
The latest research is actually describing the exact effects on the body. The harmful oral bacteria that causes gum disease and bone loss around the teeth actually is the same bacteria that is found in the fatty plaques in our arteries that cause heart attacks and strokes.
The list goes on and on… Bleeding gums can lead to auto immune disease, hypothyroidism, and migraines.
This new information requires action, so our office is making important changes. We are pleased to announce the availability of three laboratory tests relating to oral health.
The MyPerioID test is a DNA test that determines what your risk of disease is based on your genes and your body’s defenses. These changes in your genes might mean that you have a greater risk of getting gum disease. 30 to 35% of the U.S. population has this genetic variation. This increases your risk for disease and tooth loss by two-to-seven times when present.
The MyPerioPath test is a bacteria test. It detects from bacterial DNA the specific bacteria known to cause periodontal inflammation and tissue destruction. Knowing the exact bacteria in your mouth allows us to customize a treatment plan just for you.
The OraRisk HPV test detects the presence of Human Papilloma Virus. Aka “HPV” can cause cancer of the mouth and throat. OraRisk HPV should be included in risk assessment for oral cancer in conjunction with the clinical exam and ViziLite Plus oral cancer screening that we already provide.
All three of these tests are easy and painless- using only a small saliva sample collected in our office. Dr. Hepler will review your results and construct a personal oral health plan to help you reduce your risk and increase your health and quality of life.
These three tests are new and often not covered by your insurance plan. While they are important for everyone, we will only recommend them according to your situation and only perform them at your request. Please feel free to ask anyone of our team members more about these tests during your next visit with us.
At our office, we use clinical laboratory services from OralDNA LabsTM to ensure we are giving our patients the best oral health information possible.
